During the transition from SharePoint 2016 (MOSS) to SharePoint 365, some incompatibilities have been observed in Office 365 applications: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. This document provides workaround procedures to allow editing of Microsoft Office documents on MOSS. This issue only affects Office documents: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Please be sure you are using Microsoft Edge to access MOSS and not Google Chrome.

Please scroll down the page and look for the error message you are receiving for the appropriate workaround.

"We are having trouble connecting to the server" Error

Symptom

You receive the following error messages when you try to open an Office document, workbook, or presentation for editing.

Issue

You are accessing the file using HTTPS protocol.

Workaround Instructions

These instructions work if you are browsing to the document library and clicking on a file to open it and edit.

  1. Close the document or workbook. Your changes will not be saved.

  2. Check the address bar. If you see a "lock" and https, then edit the remove the s (see below).

  3. When the protocol is http, you will see the words "Not secure" and no http (see below). This is what you want!

  4. Re-open the document or workbook by clicking on the link as you did before.
